Tue, 24 June 2008 Finally we have come back around to talking about human tech, or some of the tech they will have. This will be the start of the line. We will also talk about alien tech next week. Becasue there are so many things to talk about, we talked about a few things in different catagories. Here are some of the things we talked about: Fusion reactors - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_power Fuel Cells - http://www.fuelcells.org/?gclid=CP3SqqPljZQCFSemQQod0haIXA and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_cell Nano Tech (bots) - http://www.kqed.org/quest/television/view/189?gclid=CJGiyMPljZQCFQUHQQodYx-cWA Check these things out, Ill post more about this on our new forums.

Thu, 12 June 2008 When trying to think about FTL travel, there are so many things that are overlooked. What are the problems that prevent us from going the speed of light or faster than the speed of light. Its called mass, this little thing prevents us form getting there and beyond. The other problem in space is that current propellan rockets, need to carry there own mass to have something to push against so that they can move. Now with mass come inertia, and when looking at the two and thinking of light speed. You come up with a problem, as we mentioned in the episode it looks like an Asymptote line, where the line never touches 1 or X. it goes on to infinity alwasy going on. They look like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymptote. Now that being said with any amount of mass you could not get your self to light speed let alone beyond light speed. In order to do so you would need to remove all mass or atleast your inertia, because that is what makes your mass become so massive you cant push yourself to that marker. Now with removing inertia other things start to happen. If I understand what im reading, normal propellant rockets would not work because without inertia they have no mass to push against in space causing no force to be directed. So you would need some other means than standerd propellent rockets to move you to say the nearest star. As in episode 4 we discuss the issues that happen when you take in the effects of the Higgs feild. That and the fact that the math of moving something faster than light, tends to spiral out of control, with negative mass and negative time. In doing some research into how NASA is presuing FTL travel, they are looking into a warp travel, where the ship will warp spacetime around them. http://www.nasa.gov/lb/centers/glenn/research/warp/ipspaper.html. This is an interesting read, on the things to think about when trying FTL travel. Now since Jim nor I or PHD scientest we have to look at what they are doing and the problems that they are running into. We hope to come up with a creative way to solve this problem, eventhough it technically may not work in reality, we will put rules to it and see where it takes us. If I find any further info on this subject I will add to this. Category: Encyclopedia -- posted at: 8:44 AM Comments[2] |
Wed, 11 June 2008 In this episode we talk about, the issues that come up when trying to implement the FTL travel of the Higgs Field. This actually came about when we were talking about the technology that the humans would have. As we were discussing tech, like a fusion reactor and how they work, we thought what happens when you turn on the field. so we are going to continue to work on a well rounded interstellar travel form for the humans. Like we said in the episode, if we have to make something up, we will give id a set of rules that always has to be followed. Our next episode will be on human technology followed by alien tech. Here are some things that we talked about in this episode: Interesting Theories - http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Relativity/SpeedOfLight/FTL.html Heres what the wikis say - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster_than_light_travel A funny post about Warp travel - http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/24849-what-is-this-transwarp-drive-thingy-anyhow.html Comments[0] |
Wed, 28 May 2008 In this episode we talk about the different versions of FTL travel that will take part in the universe. I have already posted descriptions of the two main types that we talk about on the show. We also recap what we meant by what sci-fi is and what fantasy is. We often rip apart things that we do not like in some shows like; Star Trek, Star Wars. Since we grew up with these shows, we like watching them but sometimes the inconsistencies just get to us. When we look at other shows/books and other media, we can see where they have gaps in the consistency. We would like to bridge that gap; even now, Jim and I will be taking another visit on our FTL episode. We will discuss possible concerns that we have come up with and try to refine these things. We would also like it if you would post any comments about your ideas, so that we can see what you think about our ideas, and maybe find something we missed. Here are some things we talk about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics_and_Star_Trek http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_boson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole Let us know what you think. Thu, 22 May 2008 In my last post, I laid down some info on the Human FTL travel. Now for the aliens. I see the aliens as having experimented with other forms of travel. I see them coming to a final result of wormhole travel, also know as folding space. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole Basically it will be very simple for them, they can create a wormhole by focusing energy particles on a certain point of space, and this will then create a gravity point that will pull the other point of space to it. And all they have to do is traverse the tunnel to the other end that they have pulled to them. Pro: Simple fast travel over short distance, requires very little of the engines. Pro: Can create micro wormholes for instant communication to the other ships or places. Con: to move large ships or fleets requires a lot of energy to create and maintain a stable wormhole while ships fly through. Con: If wormhole destabilizes it will crush object in space-time itself. These Posts are from the upcoming episode 3. In there we lay out more info on this, and talk about how they come up with these things. Also let us know what you think. Thu, 22 May 2008 There are many forms of Space travel throughout books, movies and other media. A lot of them overlap, like subspace travel, usually because its an excepted form of transportation. Also like hyperspace or the more realistic approach of wormhole travel. With the universe that we are creating, I wanted to there to be more than one type of Distance space traveling. Be it FTL or Folding Space or something else. The main ones that I will talk about are the Human form of FTL travel and the yet unnamed alien races wormhole traveling. I wanted them to have different types of travel, because they have evolved technologically separate, and the humans are a younger space farer. First of all, the Humans FTL. (The Higgs Field) -Jim The Higgs Boson - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_boson. This basically give items mass, and with mass come interactivity with other particles. The idea behind the Higgs field is two parts. 1. The field is generated, which removes all Higgs particles from an object. This means that the object no longer has mass; it is still held together because of the strong force, and the bonds between the particles are still there. Now the thing that makes this fiction is that the Higgs boson is theoretical, so coming up with the math to remove the Higgs particles is even more theoretical. What we have come up with is that since the Higgs boson is part of the Universal string theory, we have concluded that bouncing sound waves off a certain metal and said frequency removes this. Now we have a ship that has no mass/inertia and is ready for FTL travel. "And with great acceleration comes great responsibility...." - Ben Parker 2. The next part is basically a mini-particle collider on the ship. It collides a certain particle together, and calculates and tracks the expelled particles from the other smaller dimensions. Check out LHC from the other post or Google it. Once it finds a particle going said velocity, the ship then attaches to it, and simply goes that velocity. Remember, with no mass you don’t have inertia, and therefore you wont get squished when there is great acceleration. Pros: Since they do not have mass, they do not have to worry about objects in their way when traveling. It is very similar to neutrino particles, they don’t interact with things they come in contact with. This means the computer has to do very little calculations for traveling any distance. Cons: Warm-up and cool-down. It takes time for the engines to make all the needed calculations for removing all Higgs particles: this depends on the size of the ship or object it will encompass. Also, the engines have to cool down once they have dropped the field. This will prevent them from "jumping" if they get in a pinch and they will have to rely on regular engines until the Higgs field is ready again. Cons: Communication. Since they will be traveling faster than they could communicate to each other, this will make the captains of the ships more independent, but this could also cause problems. To compensate, they rely on a pony express of relay ships to bounce signals. These are ships that have very small crews and an engine. Fri, 16 May 2008 In this Episode, I lay down some refrence points for you. Then we talk about the differnce between scifi and fantasy. Last we talk about some things that influence us as hosts. We talk about: TED Larry Niven - http://www.larryniven.org/ Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - http://youtube.com/watch?v=s9XotvwgnaY These are just a few things that we talk about. Comments[0] |
Fri, 2 May 2008 Well, it is now May 2nd, as per my last post we had some issue with the equipment. Since we were not able ot get the equipment on time. We were not able to record another episode. I hope to have a time line episode for you guys soon. Category: general -- posted at: 11:16 AM Comments[1] |
Mon, 28 April 2008 There is going to be a delay in the first few episodes. We have the material to talk about, but we cant record. My little gremlin got ahold of a mic XLR cable and bent it, That mic now has a hum. I am not going to record with this cause it really drives me crazy when the sound quality is off. The interesting thing is that I went to the local Store that sells XLR cables. They had a whole shelf with cables but no price tags on them, they only said XX% off. Now I dont know everything about audio equipment, I know alot about video equipment, so I do not know if there is a difference in cables like there is for Microphones. I grab a cable after looking at the different brands and quilities, but I was still not for sure. So I took that cable up to the front counter. They had three employees working that counter and only one customer, I figured one of the other two should be able to help me. NO. I waited about 15min with no help, I even made eye contact with one of them but still no acknowledgement from them. Thus I left and with no cable. What im going to do is release a shorter episode that will go over the general time line of what major events I want to happen in my univers. I will post that up and then next time Jim and I get together we should be able to record. Sorry for delay folks, but sometime these things happens. Thu, 17 April 2008 I think we will have enough material to start on May 1st. If this is to change we will post somehting. See you then. Category: general -- posted at: 4:17 PM Comments[0] |
Thu, 17 April 2008 Since we do not have a forums, I figured we should have a way for you to get a hold of us. I have a gmail account for the show. It is redearthsaga@gmail.com. you can reach us there and give us feedback, and let us know how we are doing. Category: general -- posted at: 2:50 PM Comments[0] |
Thu, 17 April 2008 Let me talk a little more about the podcast for a second. Right now I have the introduction episodes, (0 and 1). Right now both of them are short but they are supposed to be. As for the length of the podcast episodes I will keep them to a max length of 1 hour, for now we are going to judge the standard length in the next five episodes. The episodes will be bi-weekly and have Jim and I as the main hosts, with possible guest hosts to fill in the gaps. Just to reiterate, the initial podcast will not be the reading of the stories but the ideas that make up the story. we will offer the story when its ready in PDF format and possible audio book.

Thu, 17 April 2008 Hello and welcome to my new podcast. This is going to be a completely new endeavor by me. The podcast itself will be a discussion on creating and fleshing out the ideas that I have in my head for this Universe that I have created. After we discuss said topics I then plan on writing down the write ups, and soon to have sketches follow. Jim and I will be talking about whatever topics we have some knowledge and if we don’t we hope to bring in a guest host who can fill us in. I hope to have either several short stories or a novel/novella and some short stories. We shall see how it pans out. Now some of you are probably wondering why are you doing this? To be honest I’m not the best writer, but I hope with doing this podcast I will have more and better information to put down on the page, and also be better informed on how to write this for you. I am not diluting my self as this will be a masterpiece and make me rich. I really do not intend on selling this I wish to put it up in PDA form for free, and eventually a audio book to listen to. As I have mentioned to some of my friends, When I was younger I wanted to be a movie director. I had this great idea for a movie, I needed a great space opera with better space battles and cool stuff. I tried to become a movie director and go to USC to study where the greats learned, but I suck at standardized testing and I could not afford to go there. So I found a different path in life, like so many do. But my Idea never went away it always got bigger and bigger. Now that I have a daughter I would love to tell her these stories, but Im not a writer im a Computer tech. What do I know about writing, not much, but I hope to learn through this podcast. The other reason that I am doing this is because I was inspired by a few of my friends. Dan, who you would know from fear the boot. He has his own grand story that I know he wants to tell, his Epoch of Rysos. I know that he has run this a role-playing game, as I would assume that many people with grand ideas like these do. I think if given the chance he would write a book about it, and I would love to read it. Also I was inspired by Adam, who was with fear the boot, and now is doing his own podcast about writing called the habitual insomniac. This has inspired me to get the courage to write my ideas. In fact there is already a short one page story up, I have received some critiques. I hope to write more and have people tell me what they think so that I can go back and correct these things. My hope is that I will in turn inspire someone else to write down there great stories, and that some will enjoy the Red Earth Saga. More to come later, and I hope you like it.
